Up Close Look at The Ambassadors Adaptation Props

Once of my most favourite props from The Ambassadors set was Celestial Globe. A renaisance navagational instrument. The amount of work that went into this was exstensive, every part of the prop was almost a project in iself. I had to research, the size of these globes but making mock ups and photographing which was then compared to the orginal painting to get the right size. What the frames where made out of, (Brass), what the beings were on the globe were, in this instance Celestial beings such as Pegasous, Hurcules etc that would have been use to ark out the numerous star constell

ations in the sky to help with navigation, but also what the surface of the globe would have looked like so this could be replicated. The rams that can be seen as the decorative parts of the legs were reverenced from the the painting itself. A chevant clay version was first sculpted and seen in image (left). Also seen in this image is the frame I made around this in oder to pour liquid Sylicone rubber to make a Mould. Once this mould had set Fast Cast Resin with brass powder was then added to make a positive mould. Leg of the globe where place on the back of the ram whilst the Fast Cast resein was still liquid so set the rams inplace and stick them to the legs. These where then buffed on a buffing wheel to make them look like real brass. The frame of the globe itself

is made out various thickness' of MDF and the globe itself is made out of polystyrene, this can be seen in image (right). The suface of the frame was sanded down as smooth as possible make sure I had a surface which could be painted to look like metal and not painted wood. Sanding sealer was also used to help smoothen the surface. This frame was spray painted using gold spray paint, and Van Dyke brown paint was rubbed into the surface to make it look like aged brass. Coming back the the actual globe itself, the celestial beings on the globe were exensively research to know what each of the beings were so that I could collect reverence images to position and hand paint each constolation acuratly. Note: For this prop and for many others I only had to consentrate on the details that could be seen in the painting itself so anything that could not be seen I didn;t have to do as I did not have the time the amount of weeks I was given to create this set on my own.
