Up Close look at,' The Ambassadors,' props the Lute

Here is the Lute that can be seen on the bottom right hand side of the set aswell as the original Ambassadors painting. This Lute actually tricks the eye in making the audience believe that this is a real Lute. When infact this Lute is actually made out of Cardboard and MDF. I made the Lute in a very similar way to a real Lute. The

main structure of the Lute was made on AutoCad and then laser cut out of card and the face of the Lute was laser cut out of MDF for strength. The following image shows the process of the making of the structure of the Lute.

Each piece of the Lust was glued into place with PVA and small Cardboard tabs to give extra strength. This was then covered in paper machette to give the lute even more strength.

Once all the relevant pieces were connected the surface of the Lute was then prepared so that it could be painted in such a way to fake Oak wood. This can be seen in the following image (Right). The gabs were filled using body filler amd sanding sealer. This helps to erase the cardboard texture. To fnilise this surface a caught of covernt garden primer was used to give the surface a totally flat and smooth surface to paint onto.

Once the surface is ready for painting a technique known as Trome' el loye is used to mimicoak wood. and finally vanished at the end to give the Lute it's realistic wooden finish.
